Three dates. Three fabulous beaches. Three communities.

The third year of the Triple Crown of Surf Nosara promises triple benefits: entertainment, sport and philanthropy.

Last year, all three dates of the triple crown were held at Guiones beach, but this year the tournaments are again scheduled for three very distinct locations, each with distinct challenges for the surfers.  The Triple Crown is scheduled to kick off at Barrigona Beach on January 11 at 7 a.m., followed by the outer reef of Garza Beach on February 1 at 6 a.m., and concluding at Guiones Beach for the grand finale on March 1 and 2 at 7 a.m., with judges from the Costa Rican National Surf Circuit. To add to the fun, DJ Palermo and DJ Blaxx will spin music at the events.

The outer reef of Garza promises to be especially spectacular. The point was also surfed during the first Triple Crown event in 2012, catching the attention of spectators and competitors alike. Judges, competitors and assistants watched the show from boats as surfers manipulated the large waves with intensity.

The nonprofit surf competition is an initiative of Nosara Tico Surf School. The first two year, the funds raised were used to cover travel expenses of the youth of the Nosara Surf Team so they could participate in the National Surf Circuit. Last year funds raised were also used to create the Guiones Beach Surf Association.

This year, funds raised will be used to support community projects in Nosara, Guiones and Garza, as well as a foundation called Devoted to Children Haiti. Funds may also benefit families of limited resources. The event organizers are calling for the support of individuals, businesses and organizations in order to achieve these goals. Volunteers are needed, as well as tables, chairs and tents.

Surfers wishing to compete in the tournaments should register the day before each tournament at the Nosara Tico Surf School shop, located in Guiones next to Century 21 or by leaving a message with the competitor’s full name and category on the facebook page Triple Crown of Surf Nosara 2014. Registration costs $10 for membership and $20 per category.

Categories include open, master, junior, grommet, mini grommet, women and possibly long board if enough competitors sign up for the category. Cash prizes, medals and trophies will be awarded.
