The majority of public clinics (Ebais) and hospitals run by the Costa Rica Social Security Institute in the Chorotega region are operating normally on the ninth day of a national strike against fiscal reform in Congress.
In total, 73 Ebais are open in Guanacaste and the Upala canton and 27 are closed today, the institute’s director for the Chorotega region reported.
Patients at the La Anexión Hospital in Nicoya are the most affected in the region where 75 percent of the hospital’s operating room personnel didn’t show up to work. At the laboratory, the number absent was 35% and 15% of workers in general check-ups were out. The rest of services were not affected.
At the Upala hospital, which receives patients from the Bagaces canton, 50 percent of pharmacy workers were absent.
In the case of Enrique Baltodano Hospital in Liberia, all services are operating normally.
The impact on health services provided by the social security institute at these medical centers has been reduced compared to the start of the strike, the institute’s regional director, Doctor Warner Picado Camareno, said.
“We hired interim workers due to the lack of personnel,” said Seidy Herrera, director of the Liberia Hospital, adding that they used interim nurses several days ago.
