For the majority of cultures, the month of December is synonymous with Christmas. The windy month brings some essential traditions such as tamales, caroling and traditional Christmas parties called posadas. In the cantons of Nicoya and Hojancha, Christmas festivals have become part of residents’ DNA.
In Nicoya, this year’s Nicoya Shines Festival of Light (Festival de la Luz Nicoya Brilla) will be held on December 6th. The event will start at 3 p.m. with a concert in the park by the Municipal Symphonic Band.
At 4 p.m., the municipal council’s solemn session will be held to commemorate Nicoya’s 167 years of being a canton. Thereafter, at 6 p.m., the highly-anticipated parade will begin.
According to Oliver Perez, the event’s organizer, this year 13 bands will participate, along with 10 floats. After the parade, at 10 p.m., the tropical music group Pikin y la Setima will play, and, of course, there will also be a fireworks display.
Weekend Bash in Carrillo and Nandayure
That same weekend, the canton of Carrillo has also planned activities from Thursday, the 3rd to Sunday, the 6th.
On Thursday, the main event will be at 9 p.m. with a dance concert by the group Minu Super, in the canton’s amphitheater.
In order for households’ senior citizens to enjoy the music of yesteryear, on Friday, the 4th, a concert will take place with boleros by Marimba Tempisqueña and on Sunday, the highly-anticipated parade of bands will take place.
Meanwhile, in Nandayure on Friday, the 4th, renowned musician Adrian Goizueta will delight the public with a concert in conjunction with the Guanacaste Concert Band.
The Grammy award-winning group Editus will be in Nandayure on Saturday, the 5th, for a concert in the canton’s central park at about 8 p.m. and on Sunday, the park will be filled with dancing by different choreography groups, who will perform at 7 p.m.
The Party Continues in Hojancha
One week later, the canton of Hojancha will be celebrating Christmas with the “Christmas Gathering” (Convivio Navideño) event on the 11th and 12th of December.
On Friday, the 11th, from 8 to 11 a.m., the municipal amphitheater will have special activities for the elderly, including exercises, dancing with marimba music and refreshments.
There will also be activities for kids, as from 1 to 6 p.m. that same day, young people will have the chance to play in bounce houses or have their faces painted.
At night, renowned comedians from the League of Comedy will please the public with a stand up comedy show at 7 p.m. Renzo Rimolo, Adrian Granados and Gustavo Gamboa will perform.
On the 12th, the parade of bands will start at 4 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., the park will be lit and the dance will get going to the rhythms of the band Azul Plata, until 1 a.m.
