Nosara Tennis Club’s Annual Tournament Draws a Crowd

The Nosara Tennis Club’s Annual Men’s and Women’s Open Doubles Tournament drew a crowd of 60 spectators to the finals on its Pelada courts on Sunday afternoon, February 23rd.  Dan Mainzer and Steve Reyer took first place in the Men’s Division.  They defeated Sam Carver and Steve Taylor, 6-4, 6-2, to win the championship trophy.  In the Women’s Division, Gabi Segura and Dee Haupt won, beating Mary Brennan and Jackie Haile, 6-4, 4-2 (the second set had to be shortened due to approaching darkness).

In the Consolation Division, David Payne and Marck Jansen defeated Samara players Tyrone Jackson and Yves Renard, 6-2, 6-0, to take third place overall.  Anneke Eggens and Aimee Burnam won third place in the Women’s Division by defeating Beverly Kitson and Angela Phillips, 6-4, 3-6, 15-13 tiebreaker, in a close match which went for over two and a quarter hours in the mid day heat.

The tournament, in its ninth year, spans three days every high season, with preliminary rounds all day Friday, semi-final matches on Saturday and finals for both the winning and consolation rounds on Sunday.  36 participants entered the tournament in 18 teams.  Two teams from Samara participated this year.  The tournament ended with a trophy presentation ceremony for all Sunday’s final participants and a boca party.

Jim Guterman, Tournament Director, was pleased with the participation and the community support.  “We had enough ladies teams this year to have both winning and consolation final rounds. We had two teams from Samara join us.  And look at all the people who came out to watch the finals.  That’s all great,” he said.  Spectator Jim Wall, whose wife participated in early rounds, was impressed with the high quality of the tennis in the finals.  “These guys are really good tennis players. It was great to watch,” he said.

The Nosara Tennis Club operates two courts in Playa Pelada.  Anyone can join for an annual fee of $250 per individual or $350 per family membership for open access to the courts, fully equipped with bathrooms and showers.  Club members enjoy tournaments, clinics with tennis pros, weekly round robin play, tennis ladders and a social atmosphere.  For further information about the Nosara Tennis Club and how to join, contact Peter Unverdorben at [email protected] or 2682-0636.
